What type of problems are you having with the Onyx 1640i on OSX 10.9.4?. Here in Tech Support we have used an Onyx-i mixer that has the Oxford chipset on OSX 10.9.4 and did not have any connectivity problems. Now with Mac Core Audio you should not have any major problems connecting the mixer to OSX 10.9.4 because you are using an Apple driver and there have not been many changes made to Mac Core Audio with the Mavericks OS update. Now with your version of the Onyx 1640i does not require a driver an uses Apples driver called Mac Core Audio. These interfaces are USB2 bus-powered, so there are no extra PSUs to worry about, and they offer full compatibility with Apple’s Core Audio and Windows ASIO.
